École Allain St-Cyr Addition, Yellowknife

École Allain St. Cyr is an existing school offering K-8. PSAV Architects Ltd. was retained for the design of an addition to accommodate grades 9-12.  Design for the school began in late 2006 with construction completed in September, 2008.

The addition extended an existing two storey volume at the administration area, relocating the administration area and continuing this volume into the addition as the circulation element. A large library opens into the corridor and features sliding storefront glazing and large windows facing south, enabling daylight penetration into the building.  Solar louvers protect the library from  overheating.  Classrooms, administrative offices and a stairwell  open into the corridor. The corridor itself is splayed, offering space for school and after hours francophone community activities.

Energy efficient and sustainable energy design elements such as daylight, fresh air, and views to the exterior are major considerations for every school, for École Allain St. Cry, they were exemplified in a number of ways:

  • Operable windows provide scenic views and fresh air
  • Classrooms have high level exterior windows
    allowing significant daylight penetration
  • The corridor has roof monitors,
    which provide daylight into the building
  • The library’s glazing at the exterior and interior walls allow for significant daylight in the building
  • In-floor heating and displacement ventilation provides an efficient and constant heat source with a low volume air movement environment for occupants
  • Energy efficient mechanical and electrical systems, lighting and controls
